Mother Nature Got It Back

I recently participated in another inspiring Media Blend class at MOCA with Donna Iona Drozda. Miss Iona just has a way of bringing out the best in all of her students, even when we don't recognize that it is there. My piece is a celebration of the recent "saving" of Pleasure House Point here in Virginia Beach. This beautiful piece of undeveloped property along the Lynnhaven River is now protected from development and open for all to enjoy it wonders of nature. My piece is titled "Mother Nature Got It Back" and I used window screen as the backing material. In it I used my hand-dyed fabrics, sliced and stitched together to show the different native plants in the existing habitats on the site, the fringed edges represent where the land meets the water. The hanging stick is red maple and mimics the curve of Shore Drive, the northern boundary of the property. Below the unbleached muslin area shows the nearest neighbor across the water, Bayville Golf Course. Colorful prayer flags spelling out the title drape from the red maple stick. Brown embroidery thread weaves through the screen representing the intensely developed area that abuts Pleasure House Point, and reminds us that because of human intervention nature hangs on by a slender thread. Mother Nature and all of us thank the myriad people and groups who helped acquire Pleasure House Point to preserve and protect it for the our future.

  1. Carol,
I love your work and more importantly the meaning behind what you have created. You have made an important statement with a work that is thoughtfully and creatively presented. I know that this land was very dear to your heart and to the hearts of many others and I am so thankful that the city of Virginia Beach decided to listen to their citizens for once and that this land will be preserved for generations.

  2. Hi Carol
I add an echo to what Kay says and also thank you. I really appreciate the meaning that you've made through this thoughtful blending of media.

Each aspect of your new work holds intrigue and the repurposing of your dyed fabrics is gorgeous. The screening employed as 'water' is brilliant...I love the way that the surface actually mimics the movement of water. I applaud the way that you were able to continue your prayer flag theme with the minatures holding the title, 'Mother Nature Got It Back'...yay! I love walking in this new preserve...see ya there '-)
