Tale of Three Starfish
I have lots of "precious" fabrics, you know the ones that are just too pretty and you couldn't possibly use them up. At my age I realize life is short and the amount of stuff way too long, so I've decided to jump in and and start either using my stash or passing it on to someone who will.
Here is a series of three lavender sweet bags made from pieces of beautiful batiks pieced together, cut apart and pieced back together again. A sweet bag is a colonial term for a sachet, and colonial women would have made use of every precious scrap available since they did not have the luxury of our excess. The bags are stuffed with batting and lavender and hand stitched closed.
These three sweet bags were an experiment in applique, machine stitching, and embellishment - and using up what I've stored for all these years. The beads came from a necklace I made in high school, really! My Mother always said we came from a long line of "string savers", so one of my goals this year is to break that genetic tendency. And yes, I did happily part with all three sweet bags. Wonder what's next?
