I've been told that the monarch butterflies migrating from the United States to Mexico each year travel along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel during their southward route. After a particularly windy few days I don't think they fared so well on this leg of their journey. So many butterflies were "meurte" along the beach - mostly at the edge of the surf.
I grow seaside goldenrod in my garden because it is one of their nectar plants, but mine hasn't started blooming yet. The Monarch population is already under stress due to the development of their winter habitat in Mexico. Hopefully this fatal crossing of the Chesapeake Bay won't crimp their survival rate more.
